who needs orthotics and AFOs?
While all of our shoes are designed for maximum comfort, some kids require extra support to promote good development and stay comfortable. Every child is special, and the reasons why some kids require orthotic support are just as unique.
Some children may need orthotics because they have weak joints or gait deviations, while others may need an AFO to help bring the foot and ankle into alignment as their musculature develops. Whatever the reason, a podiatrist can recommend the right
kind of orthotic to provide additional comfort and support as your little one learns to navigate the world around them. Once your kiddo finds the right orthotics, it's time to find quality shoes that keep them safe and secure and still look stylish
common types of kids' orthotics
Just like there are many different types of health conditions that can require orthotic support, there are also lots of different types of orthotics. Orthotics can range from shoe inserts to leg braces. Here's a closer look at some of the most common
orthotics kids need:
- Supra Malleolar Orthosis (SMO) is one of the simplest orthotics. SMOs are molded to your child's foot based on their specific needs and are designed to slide right into the footbed of certain shoes.
- Ankle-Foot-Orthosis (AFO) is one of the most common types of orthotics used to stabilize the ankle. Usually, an AFO forms an L-frame running from just below the knee to the head of the foot.
- The similar Knee-Ankle-Foot Orthosis (KAFO) is a brace that extends above the knee and stabilizes both the knee and ankle. A KAFO is often used in cases of muscle weakness or partial paralysis.
- If your child has trouble coordinating their steps or transferring their energy from foot to foot, a podiatrist may recommend a Hip-Knee-Ankle-Foot Orthosis (HKAFO), which acts as a link between two KAFOs.
The shoes in our orthotics and AFO collection offer wide widths, half sizes, and some even include removable inserts to make it easy to find the perfect fit for your child's needs.
shoes that accommodate braces and orthotics
All orthotics can present special challenges when shoe shopping, especially since the extra equipment or material may cover some or all of the foot. Simply put, your little one will need a shoe that can accommodate either the shoe insert or the brace
that is on their foot. In many cases, you may need two differently sized shoes, which can make finding a comfortable pair an even bigger challenge.
By shopping Stride Rite, you're shopping with the kids' shoe experts. We want your little boy or girl to feel happy and mobile in their footwear. That’s why we offer shoes that can accommodate a variety of orthotic devices and inserts with oversized
openings, easy closures, wide and extra-wide widths, and the best support possible.
